SonoranScienceAcademy Decathlon Team Advances to State
Nine SonoranScienceAcademy students spent 6 months preparing for the 26th annual regional competition, held in Sierra Vista this past weekend. The Academic Decathlon is one of the most rigorous nationwide high school competitions, where each student must compete in economics, art, music, mathematics, literature, science, history and essay writing. Students also submit to a formal interview, deliver a four-minute prepared speech and a 90 second impromptu speech. The theme this year was the French Revolution and chemistry was the science focus. 21 schools participated in the regional competition and SSA’s team performance advanced them to the state competition, which will be in Phoenix, in March. Individually, Ian Armstrong garnered a gold medal in math and Brian Cloutier received a bronze medal in chemistry. Team members were: Ostin Zarse, Benjamin DePue, Erika Tinley, Maria Bressler, Brian Cloutier, Josh Maldonado, Joseph Garcia, Ian Armstrong, and Liam Hanlon.
