A Consistent Winner

For the third year in a row, Katharine McMurray, a junior at Sonoran Science Academy, has participated in the American Legion National Oratorical Contest. For the third year in a row, also, she has won both the regional and area contests and has been moved on to the state contest. Three areas’ winners will be competing in the state level on March 7, 2009 in Phoenix, Arizona. The competition is comprised of one 8-10 minute prepared speech on some facet of the United States constitution and one

3-5 minute impromptu speech on an article or amendment of the constitution chosen on site from four possibilities. Katherine’s prepared speech is on the 24
th Amendment (Abolition of Poll Taxes) and its effect on voting. Article 3, Section 3 about treason was the short speech topic selected for her in the area leg of the contest.
